Common questions

What is a UK unit of alcohol?

One UK unit is 10ml (8g) of pure ethanol. The formula is: (ABV% × volume in ml) ÷ 1000. A pint of 4% beer is about 2.3 units. A 175ml glass of 12% wine is about 2.1 units.

How many units a week is safe?

The UK Chief Medical Officer's guidance is under 14 units a week for both men and women, spread over three or more days, with several drink-free days. There is no completely safe level of alcohol.

How many calories in alcohol?

Alcohol has 7 kcal per gram of pure ethanol — nearly as calorie-dense as fat (9 kcal/g). A single UK unit contains around 56 kcal from alcohol alone, before mixers or sugars. A large glass of wine can hit 200+ kcal.

Is this calculator accurate?

Unit maths is exact — it uses the official UK formula. Calorie estimates are for the alcohol content only; sugars and mixers can add significantly more.
