Common questions

What is the AUDIT test?

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is a 10-question screen developed by the World Health Organization. UK guidelines (NICE, PHE) use AUDIT and AUDIT-C to identify risky drinking and possible dependence. This quiz follows the same scoring.

What score means I'm dependent on alcohol?

A total score of 20 or more suggests possible alcohol dependence and warrants a full clinical assessment. Scores of 16–19 indicate harmful drinking. 8–15 is increasing risk. Below 8 is lower risk, though not zero risk.

I'm a 'functioning alcoholic' — will this pick that up?

Yes. AUDIT catches people who drink daily, drink to cope, or need a morning drink to steady themselves — even when work and family life still look intact. Those items score highly regardless of employment or lifestyle.

Can I stop drinking on my own if I'm dependent?

If you drink heavily every day, stopping suddenly can cause seizures and, rarely, death. Anyone scoring 20+, or drinking daily for months, should speak to a GP or a private detox provider before stopping — a supervised detox is safer and more comfortable.
