Does Vitality cover rehab?

Vitality treats addiction as a mental-health claim, so cover depends on whether your plan includes the mental-health option and what inpatient allowance that option carries.

VitalityHealth treats addiction as a claimable condition on some plans and excludes it on others. Below is what we see in practice when we place insured clients, and the order to do things in so a claim isn't voided before it starts.

Check what your Vitality policy will actually fund

Tell us your plan and situation. We'll tell you what Vitality typically authorises, which clinics it uses, and what self-funding would cost if the claim is declined.

Clearpath UK Rehab is principally a referral service: we do not own, operate or provide treatment at any clinic. We are funded by fees paid to us by partner rehabilitation services when a person we refer takes up a placement with them. Free NHS and charity support is available without going through us — see the free help options on this page.

Typical allowance and claim route

Usual allowance
Mental-health inpatient allowance, often 28 days, subject to the plan's mental-health module
How the claim runs
Start with Vitality's mental-health claim line for authorisation, then a consultant referral. Vitality will name the clinics your plan can use.
Clinic network
Because Vitality routes addiction through mental health, cover can look better on paper than in practice — the allowance is shared with other mental-health claims.

Usually covered

  • Consultant psychiatric assessment
  • Inpatient mental-health admission including detox where clinically needed
  • Outpatient therapy under the mental-health allowance

Usually excluded

  • Long-stay residential rehabilitation beyond the allowance
  • Sober living and secondary care
  • Court-mandated treatment

What gets a Vitality claim declined

  • · Mental-health cover not added to the plan
  • · Substance dependence excluded even where mental health is covered
  • · Underwriting exclusion for pre-existing dependence
  • · No consultant-led referral

Common questions

Does Vitality cover rehab?

Vitality treats addiction as a mental-health claim, so cover depends on whether your plan includes the mental-health option and what inpatient allowance that option carries.

How much treatment does Vitality pay for?

Mental-health inpatient allowance, often 28 days, subject to the plan's mental-health module. The exact figure is set by your plan, not by the clinic, and only Vitality can confirm it.

How do I claim rehab on Vitality?

Start with Vitality's mental-health claim line for authorisation, then a consultant referral. Vitality will name the clinics your plan can use.

Why would Vitality decline a rehab claim?

Mental-health cover not added to the plan. Substance dependence excluded even where mental health is covered. Underwriting exclusion for pre-existing dependence. No consultant-led referral.

Does Vitality cover outpatient addiction treatment?

Outpatient treatment — therapy sessions, psychiatric reviews and day programmes — is more commonly covered than residential rehab and usually sits under the policy's mental-health or out-patient limit rather than needing hospital authorisation. It is often the easiest claim to get approved, and for many people an intensive outpatient programme plus medical support achieves what a residential stay would. Confirm the session limit and referral requirement with your insurer first.

What if Vitality won't pay?

Self-funding a mid-market CQC-registered clinic, a shorter detox-only admission, intensive outpatient therapy, or the free NHS community route are the realistic alternatives. We'll set out the options and prices rather than push one.
