Rehab payment plans

Ways to spread the cost of private treatment in the UK — what clinics actually offer, and what it costs in total.

Most people who need private treatment do not have £10,000 sitting ready. The cost is usually spread rather than avoided: a clinic instalment plan, family contributions, regulated finance, employer support, or staging detox now and therapy later. Which combination works depends on how urgent the admission is and what monthly figure is sustainable.

Tell us your budget and we'll match it to real options

Give us a monthly figure you could manage and we'll come back with clinics that fit, including which ones offer instalments. We are a referral service, not a clinic or a lender.

Clearpath UK Rehab is principally a referral service: we do not own, operate or provide treatment at any clinic. We are funded by fees paid to us by partner rehabilitation services when a person we refer takes up a placement with them. Free NHS and charity support is available without going through us — see the free help options on this page.

Ways to spread the cost

OptionTypical structureWhat to watch
Clinic instalment planDeposit plus 3-12 monthly paymentsAvailability varies by clinic and is often discretionary; get it in writing before the admission date.
Family or third-party fundingSplit across contributors, invoiced directlyAgree who pays what, and check the clinic's refund terms for early discharge.
Regulated medical / personal finance12-60 months, credit-checkedInterest applies. Compare total repayable, not the monthly figure.
Employer support or EAPFull or part contributionOften overlooked. HR involvement can usually be limited to the scheme rather than your manager.
Insurance plus top-upInsurer pays the covered portion, you fund the restNeeds pre-authorisation, and the clinic must be in-network.
Staged treatmentDetox now, therapy over following monthsLower up-front cost, but only where a clinician agrees the split is safe.

What a plan usually looks like in practice

For a mid-market 28-day residential stay at around £9,000, a common structure is a deposit of roughly a third before admission with the balance over six months. Where a clinic will not spread payments, the same stay is often funded by two or three family members contributing, or by detox first at £3,000-£6,000 with structured therapy taken as weekly outpatient sessions afterwards. The cheapest safe version of treatment is rarely the cheapest treatment on paper, because a detox that fails and has to be repeated costs more than doing it properly once.

Questions to ask a clinic before you pay anything

  • What is the total fee, and what is explicitly not included — medication, assessment, aftercare, transport?
  • What deposit is required, and when is the balance due?
  • If they offer instalments: is any interest or fee applied, and is the agreement in writing?
  • What happens financially if the person leaves early or is discharged?
  • Can a third party pay, and can payment be split between people?
  • Is the provider CQC-registered, and what was the most recent rating?

Common questions

Can you pay for rehab monthly in the UK?

Yes, in several ways. Some private clinics offer their own instalment plans, usually with a deposit before admission and the balance spread over three to twelve months. Where a clinic does not offer instalments directly, people commonly use regulated medical or personal finance, family contributions, or a combination.

Do clinics ask for money up front?

Almost always a deposit, and many self-pay clinics ask for the full stay up front unless an instalment arrangement is agreed in advance. Because that is the point where admissions can stall, it is worth agreeing the payment structure before the admission date, not on the day.

Is there interest-free rehab finance?

Sometimes on clinic-run plans over short terms, but it is not the norm and terms vary by provider. Third-party finance is credit and is subject to affordability checks and interest, so the total repayable can be materially higher than the headline fee. Always read the total cost of credit rather than the monthly figure.

Can family pay for someone else's treatment?

Yes, and it is one of the most common funding routes. Clinics can invoice a third-party payer, and several family members can split a stay. Where the person going in has not agreed a plan yet, it is sensible to confirm the clinic's cancellation and refund terms first.

What about using a pension, equity or savings?

People do use pension drawdown, remortgaging or equity release to fund treatment, and the sums involved are large enough that regulated financial advice is genuinely worth taking first. We do not advise on any of these and receive nothing from them.

What is the cheapest realistic private option?

A medically supervised home detox is usually the lowest-cost private route, commonly £1,500-£2,500, where it is clinically safe for that person. Inpatient detox generally runs £3,000-£6,000, and a 28-day residential programme £6,000-£15,000 at mid-market UK providers. Safety, not price, has to decide between them.
